Wedding Story

1989-1993

Heather and Thom meet at Augsburg College.  They have mutual friends but never really get to know each other.  There is one interesting bit of information from this time period however.  Many months before they started dating a friend of Heather’s met Thom for the first time.  Although both of them were in serious relationships at the time and were still merely acquaintances, Heather’s friend told her quite confidently that Heather and Thom were going to end up together.

1993-2004

Who would have thunk it?  Heather and Thom’s friend Mark casually suggests that his two friends, both now single, get together.  They go out on a date and continue to do so for twelve years!  Actually Thom and Heather have considered each other “partners” for most of this time, having no plans to ever be married (for various reasons).

Winter 2005

Thom spends the winter camping in a swamp in Kootchiching County on a contract with the DNR.  He has much time to think as he spends most of these three months in solitude (and potential danger).  He comes to the conclusion that, regardless of his reservations about marriage, that “it was just time.”

Later while planning a weekend getaway to celebrate the completion of his winter job, Thom suggests that they make the weekend an engagement celebration.  After many pointed questions (knowing Thom’s previous feelings about marriage) Heather agrees!

May 6, 2005

Heather, Thom and their best friends Eric, Brad and his wife Brita go to the Cass County courthouse and recite the vows they wrote together before the court administrator.  Five minutes, and a few signatures later they are married.  The wedding party then returned home for the big reception.  That is, champagne, wedding cake, barbeque and croquet!
